New Hospital opens in Ruhango District

Kigali May 29th - A new hospital, Ruhango District Hospital has opened its doors to the population of this District effective May 28th as part of Government’s vision to better serve the population and reach the vision 2020 and MDGs.

Ruhango District hospital has capacity of 300 beds and will serve a population estimated at 286,000 within its catchment area that includes the sectors of Kinazi, Ntondwe, Mbuye and Ruhango.

“The opening of this hospital should be seen in the context of Government’s commitment to extend health-care services closer to the population,” said Dr Agnes Binagwaho, Minister of Health. “Particularly, we extend our appreciation to H.E the President for his support on this project and we are happy to note that the opening of this hospital is a fulfillment of the pledge made by the President to the people of Ruhango.”

The hospital opened its doors with 7 Doctors, 19 Nurses and 11 midwives, other support staff and equipment to support its operations in the initial stages. The Ministry of Health will reinforce the hospital with more human resource and equipment for the health facility to offer high quality services.

In addition to the new Ruhango hospital, the district is covering a catchment area served by seven health centers. The district is also served by Gitwe hospital covering six health centers.
