Brazil Supports Rwanda To Combat The COVID-19 Pandemic

KIGALI, September 22, 2020 – Rwanda has received from the government of Brazil a donation of 1,650 medical coveralls worth US$50,000 to support the country in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. The disposable coveralls provide personal protection to health care workers engaging directly with COVID-19 patients to avoid transmission.  They will be distributed to health facilities and treatment centres where patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) are being treated.

“This generous contribution from the Federative Republic of Brazil will complement national efforts to reduce new infections of COVID-19,” said Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Director General of Rwanda Biomedical Centre.

“This contribution is part of the government of Brazil’s global initiative to support a number of countries, including Rwanda, in their fight to overcome the pandemic and save lives,” said H.E. Mr. Fernando Estellita Lins de Salvo Coimbra, Brazilian Ambassador to Rwanda. “This gesture demonstrates Brazil’s solidarity and willingness to cooperate with Rwanda”, he added.

The contribution has been channelled through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to expedite the availability of this critical Personal Protective Equipment, given the agency’s strong supply chain network both in Rwanda and globally.

“Thanks to the support of Brazil, WFP is providing vital supply chain assistance to Rwanda’s Ministry of Health to help front-line medical personnel in their life-saving efforts to combat the spread of this virus”, said Edith Heines, WFP Rwanda Representative and Country Director.

According to data from the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, since the outbreak of COVID-19 in March, Rwanda has recorded 4738 confirmed cases, 2991 recoveries and 127 deaths due to the global pandemic. The Government of Rwanda and partners have put in place strong preventive measures that include mass testing.  To date, over 479,010 tests have been conducted in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.
