Mother and Child Health Week kicks off


The Ministry of Health through Rwanda Biomedical Centre, in collaboration with districts across the country kick off the first decentralized and district-led campaign to promote Health of the child from 22nd  February to 7th March 2021.



The services that include Vitamin A, Deworming tablets, Ongera micro nutrient and screening of malnutrition are provided door to door by Community Health workers with the support of Mutwarasibo under coordination of village leader and other local leaders. In schools, services are provided by teacher in class by class under coordination of school director.


The campaign dubbed as ‘Child Health Week’ was decentralized to enable engagement of community and local leaders and schools to identify local health issues and set local feasible measures to eliminate those health issues they face in a mutual approach.


Simpenzwe Pascal, the Vice Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs in Nyabihu district, at the launch of Health week at Bigogwe II Primary School in Bigogwe sector, said the campaign is very important as it help promote health of mothers and children.


“This campaign is an opportunity to address poor hygiene related diseases, Neglected Tropical Diseases; maternal and child nutrition, malaria etc.” Said Simpenzwe

According to Sebashyitsi Sebugigiri one of the parent of a child at Bigogwe II Primary School, the child mother and health campaign will  strengthen learning of children because when children are healthy rate of attendance increases;
Rwanda has committed to eliminate diseases related to poor hygiene including intestinal worms, schistosomiasis, jiggers and Podoconiosis by 2024, and reduce stunting among children under five. Rwanda aims to reduce stunting from 33% to 19% by 2024 and plans to reduce intestinal worms among school age children from 45% in 2014 to below 20% by 2024.
